The Veterans Service Commission was established in 1886 by the Ohio Legislature to assist Veterans and their families in times of need. Today, the Henry County Veterans Service Commission provides financial assistance, referrals, information, and aid in obtaining Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.
There are many benefits and services available to Veterans and their families. However, these benefits are often overlooked or under-utilized by those eligible to take advantage of them. The Henry County Veterans Service Commission exists to provide information and referrals so that Veterans and their families can obtain all the benefits to which they are entitled.
Temporary Financial Assistance
The Henry County Veterans Service Commission provides Veterans with emergency help for food, clothing, housing, and utilities. Assistance can be given immediately to eligible Veterans with the proper documents. Funds are provided on a short-term basis until permanent solutions can be found.
Department of Veterans Affairs Application Assistance
Veterans and their dependents who need help preparing and filing applications for VA benefits can contact the Henry County Veterans Service Commission Office for assistance.
The Service Officer can provide information regarding eligibility for disability pensions, Housebound or Aid and Attendance benefits, insurance, and the Ohio Veterans Home.
The Henry County Veterans Service Commission can advise widows or dependents on eligibility for benefits such as VA Burial, American Flag, Plot Allowances, and Pensions.
To qualify for benefits, Veterans must have been Honorably discharged from active military service performed for other than training purposes.
To qualify for financial assistance, Veterans must have resided in Ohio and in Henry County three months prior to application. There are no residency requirements to obtain assistance in making claims for VA benefits.
Discharge records, proof of income and other assets, copies of current bills, rental agreements, and proof of residency may be required at the time of application.
Military records, marriage records, divorce papers, birth or adoption records of dependent children, death certificates, insurance records, or other documents may also be required.
Transportation of Veterans to VA Medical Centers can be arranged for those who have no other means.
