The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for the county. They are responsible for keeping the public peace within the county. They enforce all traffic and drunk driving laws. They also investigate crimes, enforce court orders, deliver subpoenas, and attend court sessions.

The Sheriff is the administrator of the county jail and is responsible for keeping prisoners confined safely by attending to the jail and regulating the jail according to the Ohio minimum jail standards.

The Sheriff is required to visit the jail once a month to inspect the inmates. The Sheriff and his deputies are sometimes contracted for police protection in small cities and villages.
